A romantic fish supper at The Waterside restaurant in Flushing

We were in desperate need of a getaway so on a Friday night my man and I escaped the metropolis and ventured down the busy A303 and on to Cornwall. The journey was long but oh so worth it because when we arrived we found ourselves staying in the most wonderful place in the pretty village of Flushing called New Quay Lodge. This beautiful grade II listed maisonette was once the home of a Merchant Ship Captain and has bags of character. Better still, it is situated on a corner with fabulous views across the Penryn River to Falmouth which looked so pretty lit up at night accross the water. All that and it’s just a couple of minutes walk to a great local pub!

The following night we treated ourselves to a fantastic meal at The Waterside. It was the perfect place for a romantic dinner in the springtime and there was a great buzz as the restaurant filled up with the chit-chat of locals, journalists and visitors like ourselves. The menu was full of fresh local produce with so much to choose from on the walls it was hard to make a decision without changing your mind. I went for seafood in the end and it was exquisite!

Towards the end of the evening the French chef, Vincent Bethermin, ventured out of the kitchen and made a lovely gesture of speaking to the customers, stopping at each table and checking all was ok. I couldn’t recommend this place more for a wonderfully romantic night out. The service was great and the cosy atmosphere really made for a comfortable, intimate evening. If you happen to be on the Falmouth side, this place is totally worth the boat ride across the river!
